How Every Agent accesses and responds in Slack

Which conversations Every Agent can read, when it responds, how workspace boundaries work, and who can use it.

Every Agent works only in Slack conversations where you've given it access. It doesn't passively read your entire workspace.

Which Slack conversations can Every Agent read?

Every Agent can read:

  • Direct messages sent to it

  • Channels it has been explicitly invited to

  • Threads it is already participating in

It cannot read channels it has not been invited to, and it does not use an individual person’s Slack token to read the full workspace.

Can I give Every Agent access to the whole workspace?

No. Workspace-wide passive reading through Slack user tokens isn't supported.

Every Agent needs to be invited to each channel where you want it to work.

What Slack permissions does Every Agent request?

Every Agent is installed as a Slack app, and Slack shows the full permission list during installation. Permissions are granted at the app level, and Every Agent still only reads and posts in the conversations it has been added to.

What Every Agent can view

In channels and conversations it has been added to:

  • Messages and other content in public channels

  • Messages and other content in private channels

  • Basic information about those channels, direct messages, and group direct messages

  • Files shared in those channels and conversations

  • Pinned content

  • Message metadata

  • Messages that mention it directly

Across the workspace:

  • Basic information about public channels

  • Emoji reactions and their associated content

  • The contents of canvases and lists created in Slack

  • agent.every.to URLs in messages

  • Bookmarks

  • User groups

  • People in the workspace, their profile details, and their email addresses

  • Do Not Disturb settings

  • Custom emoji

  • Reminders it created

  • The name, email domain, and icon of the workspaces it is connected to

What Every Agent can do

  • Send messages, including with a customized username and avatar

  • Create, edit, and remove canvases and lists

  • Join public channels

  • Create public and private channels, and manage the ones it has been added to

  • Upload, edit, and delete its own files

  • Start direct messages and group direct messages

  • Add and remove pinned messages and files

  • Add and edit emoji reactions

  • Create, edit, and remove bookmarks

  • Show previews of agent.every.to URLs in messages

  • Add and remove reminders, and mark them complete

Can Slack guests use Every Agent?

Single-channel Slack guests are not currently supported, for security reasons.

When does Every Agent respond?

By default, Every Agent responds when you:

  • Send it a direct message

  • @-mention it in a channel

  • Reply in a thread it is already participating in

How do I get Every Agent to respond without an @-mention?

Ask it in that channel. For example: "@Every please respond to every message in this channel, even if you aren't tagged." Ask it to stop the same way.

A workspace administrator can also turn this on or off for any channel from Admin > Settings in the Every dashboard.

Does Every Agent work on free Slack plans?

Yes, with limits. The full AI agent interface requires a paid Slack plan. On free Slack plans, you can still use Every Agent through direct messages and @-mentions.

Does every message start a new task?

No. In a thread Every Agent is already working in, a new message adds guidance to the task it is already doing. A new message in the channel starts a new task.

Can Every Agent access information across Slack workspaces?

No. Each Slack workspace install is separate, with its own data, connections, and resources. Every Agent doesn't read or combine data across installs. A person with access to several workspaces can see them together in the dashboard, but the data behind them stays separate.

Does everyone on my team need an Every account?

No. Anyone in the Slack workspace can talk to Every Agent without one.

A free Every account is all you need to:

  • Add personal connections

  • Use the Every dashboard

Usage is free up to an allowance Every covers for each person. See the article on pricing and spend controls for what happens after that.
